Michigan AFL-CIO criticizes Walberg

The Jackson Citizen Patriot has aninteresting article, Union raps Walberg.

U.S. Rep. Tim Walberg has drawn fire in his first days in office for voting against pork-barrel spending reforms and not knowing how many auto workers he represents in South Central Michigan.

Walberg, R-Tipton, told a C-SPAN reporter Thursday he "couldn't give you an exact number" of auto employees in the 7th District, adding the best way to help the ailing Big Three is to cut taxes.

"He should be ashamed of himself for not knowing that or having a general idea," said Michigan AFL-CIO President Mark Gaffney.

I am very glad that Mark Gaffney is paying attention to the 7th. If we are to take back this district Labor support will be critical.

Representative Walberg is ripe for a recall election; he has a very limited base of fundamentalist christians. I am certain that a more suitable representative for this district could be voted into office once such a recall is completed and successful.

There is no provision for recall in the United States Constitution.

Recall is covered by the Michigan state constitution. Walberg, as well as any other elected government official can be recalled. I have done it during the 1990's on Nick Smith. The recall petition was approved by a board in Hillsdale County but the petition was never circulated.
Should such an effort commence against Walberg, both political parties, who dislike him, would make such a task easy. The follow-up election would give us some new faces with more steps on their ladders.

I may be wrong but this is determined by the US Constitution. Just like when Michigan's term limits did not apply to Congress. I will check this out more.

I think I stand corrected.

MICHIGAN ELECTION LAW (EXCERPT)
Act 116 of 1954

168.149 Representative in congress; recall.

Sec. 149.

Persons holding the office of representatives in congress are subject to recall by the qualified and registered electors of their congressional districts as provided in chapter 36 of this act.

Although, this seems to be in conflict with the US Constitution.
In Article 1 Section 2 of the Constitution it states, The House of Representatives shall choose their speaker and other officers; and shall have the sole power of impeachment.

Impeachment in the US constitution refers to those federal government officials holding federal positions. District congressional representatives are chose by the citizens of the district. Trust me, this can be done and if ever a representative deserved such a political action, this guy does.

Okay you blowhards, how many auto workers are in the 7th district? I'll bet you didn't know without going to look it up on Google. Walberg was just sworn in last Thursday. It will take him a little time to learn everything. You are so eager to tear him down that you'll pounce on any minor thing to claim he is unqualified. It shows that you are all just bitter partisan hacks. Walberg won both the primary and general elections with over 50% of the vote so why would you suggest a recall? You are all the same fools that are still complaining about how Bush and the Supreme Court stole the 2000 election.

BIFF ....go back to your "I LOVE TIM WALBERG" website. Read this man's past. He clearly is not suited for this position. PERIOD!!!!!!!!!

DEFEAT WALBERG '08

NICK SMITH

Biff,

If you read my comments I never asked for a recall. I have never said I thought the 2000 election was stolen.

I contribute to this blog because I do not agree with Tim Walberg on much and I believe he is to the far right of the majority of the voters in the 7th. I believe we (Democrats)can win this district.

As for "pouncing on any minor thing" I posted this because it was news. Any time Michigan AFL-CIO President Mark Gaffney takes interest in this district I will post it. I believe that if Labor had become interested in this district in 2005 we would be talking about a new Democratic Congressperson, and not Sharon Renier.

And, Biff, before you defend Walberg, think it through. (I am the anonymous poster who just defended you from jim carr on the Medicare thread... but this is an example of naivete.)

If Walberg was truly interested in the workers of his district, he would have reached out to an organization which represents 28,000 workers. He does not know their influence because he does not care and has no plan to represent them. Ask Walberg how many pentecostal churches there are in the 7th and he will quickly respond. Ask him how many Right-to-Life members there are, and he will recite it without hesitation. Do not make apologies for him. Walberg is bright enough to reseach the data which matters to him. He now lives in the birthplace of the friggin' car industry, and if he cared about understanding our economy, he would have at least sat down once with the workers and had an informal "get-to-know-eachother" session. I doubt that will ever happen, because he has been openly hostile to the existence of organized labor in the past. Besides, the Club for Growth would have to give him a spanking if he spoke to a union worker and Walberg would not want to jeopardize the campaign cash gravy train.
