Minimum Wage Increase Passes - Walberg Votes No

Today, the House passed HR 2, 315-116. This would increase the current federal minimum wage from $5.15 an hour to $7.25 an hour over two years.

Tim Walberg voted No. Once again, many Republicans crossed over to side with the Democrats in this vote-- 82, to be exact. Among them, Vern Ehlers (MI-03), Fred Upton (MI-06), Candice Miller (MI-10), and Thaddeus McCotter (MI-11). Michigan Republicans voting no (besides Congressman Walberg) were Peter Hoekstra (MI-02), Dave Camp (MI-04), and Mike Rogers (MI-08). Joe Knollenberg (MI-09) did not vote.

No big surprise, really. Walberg voted against raising Michigan's minimum wage plenty of times in the Michigan House.

Here's a suggestion for this site: Set up a countdown clock until the 2008 election and the 111th Congress and have a running tally on the NO votes Walberg casts (if you can keep up with them!). I think seeing a clock here would be a riot!

Not on this topic, but on Tuesday I was flipping channels and came across C-span with congressman making statements regarding a resolution honoring Gerald Ford.
To my horror, all of a sudden I hear, "The gentleman from Michigan is recognized for 2 minutes." Lo & behold it was our own Rep./Pastor Walberg! Supressing my desire to turn the channel, I forced myself to listen.
During his short speech, I noticed how Rep./Pastor Walberg mentioned that Gerald Ford had beaten an incumbent Republican in a primary in 1948 to get elected to Congress, thereby directly/indirectly drawing a parallel between himself & Mr. Ford.
To paraphrase Lloyd Bentsen, "Jerry Ford was a friend of mine, Rep./Pastor Walberg, you are NO Jerry Ford!

*Thks for the web site, will check back periodically to see how Rep./Pastor Walberg is treating his flock, er sheep, er constituency...

To paraphrase Lloyd Bentsen,

I'd say Walberg is more like Nancy than Ronald Reagan

JUST SAY NO!

As addicted to C-SPAN as I usually am, I missed that. So I went and checked the Congressional Record, just out of curiosity. For those interested, here's Walberg's statement:

___
Mr. Speaker, I rise as a proud Michigander today to express my profound respect and appreciation and admiration for the life and public service of our 38th President.
President Gerald Ford was a man of impeccable integrity and ethics
who served valiantly in World War II on the USS Monterey, where he came close to losing his life in December of 1944. After returning home to Michigan, his calling remained in public service to his country. He ran for the Grand Rapids area congressional seat against an incumbent Republican congressman. Nobody thought he could win. But with a strong conviction and a clear contrast between the two, he won two-to-one in the primary.
President Ford went on to serve 25 years in the U.S. House and was
voted in 1961 by the House membership as a ``Congressman's
Congressman.'' Rising to the rank of Republican leader, he was known
for his modesty, his intelligence and thoughtfulness throughout his
career. After Ford became President, his decisions that he made, though costing him politically, healed a fractured Nation. Today, we thank him
for putting our country ahead of his own political success.
May we never forget this great Michigander, and may the Lord's
blessings be upon his family.

I agree with Walberg (wow!), Gerald Ford was a good man. But you're right, the emphasis on the primary victory seemed a little more about Walberg than it was about Ford.

Thanks for pointing this out.

Say what you want but Tim Walberg will be a GREAT Congressman!
He will stay in touch with his contingency and respect them.

That's more than I can say for other Congressmen who go to DC and crave power and more power.

Kathy,

How is Walberg respecting anyone when he says that there should not be an increase in the minimum wage. I guess if you make the minimum wage you should just be happy you have a job.

I wonder if we put him on minium wage if he could live and with his family in tow as well???? I think not. GOD!!!!! What the hell were the people in this state thinking when they voted for him!!!???

We could put him on minimum wage, but he will still be earning $40,000+ from his pension for serving in the state House. And, health care for life for him and his wife.

Oooooh, can't you almost hear "I'm gonna be just like Jerry" in his humble little speech? Can you read the name, "President Walberg" in his eyes?
