Battle Creek Town Hall Monday

This was in the Battle Creek Enquirer today.

Walberg plans town meeting for Monday

U.S. Rep. Tim Walberg, R-Tipton, is planning a town hall meeting in Battle Creek on Monday.

The meeting is open to the public, and is set for 7 p.m. in the Miller Stone Building, 77 Capital Ave. N.E.

I've complained about Walberg only holding meetings in friendly areas of the district, but (for once) he's finally holding a real meeting. It's in the largest city of the district, where there are Democrats and Republicans who might disagree with him, and it's being held at 7 PM, meaning there could be a real turnout for it-- not like some meetings, held at inconvenient times for working people.

When I went to one of these in Adrian, I was in a very small minority of people that disagreed with his politics. It would be great if all of you in the Battle Creek area could make it out and ask Walberg some tough questions.

Ask Congressman Walberg why he wants to drill for oil in the world's largest supply of fresh water. Ask him why he goes around the district lying to voters about a "tax increase" that doesn't exist. Ask him when we can expect to see our soldiers come home from Iraq, and just what "victory" is ('cause he's never really explained that).

I'd love to hear from anyone that attends (or see video, if anyone wants to try that). E-mail me at fitzy.bd[at]gmail[dot]com if you're planning to attend and you'd like to tell me about it.

Hey,
You can call Matt Lahr at Tim's office and ask if he will aloow videos, maybe they will say yes! I saw Tim in Saline and would like to see what he says tonight...

Here's the link to today's story. Doesn't sound too eventful.

I'm not sure what Elvis is refering to. Why does Matt Lahr get to call the shots at public meetings? Seems to me that he cannot dictate who tapes what an event. It's public and videotapers are informing the public, right??

If Walberg's events are private, then shouldn't they be invitation only and expressly stated that they are in fact *not* "town hall meetings" but private get togethers. Any attorneys/right activists out there to anser these questions.

Also, why not *record* his statements? Or is that forbidden by Matt Lahr, whovever he thinks he is?

Walberg needs to read the Open Meetings Act. If it's a public meeting, the public can take notes and record. If his staff says otherwise, they're looking for a lawsuit.

Are you sure? I was under the impression the Open Meetings Act dealt more with meetings of the legislature, committees, etc., but I might be wrong.

Anyone understand these things better than I do?

The Open Meetings Act does not apply to this, but the First Amendment clearly does.

Walberg is a political figure, and elected official, and everything he says representing his policy positions have the right to be public knowledge. Walberg Watch is clearly a news organ and has every right to tape. I'm not an attorney, but I know that Lahr is open for legal action of some sort.

At the very least, he is open for exposure as anti-first amendment and hiding his candidates views from constituents.
